For the past 3 decades attempts at treating stretch marks have been largely unsuccessful. While we have had some success in treating red stretch marks soon after their appearance, once they turn white treatments have been minimally successful. Topical vitamin A, microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing, non-ablative lasers, and peels have all failed at resolving what is clearly an embarrassing problem. Ultrasound appeared to be the answer for cellulite back in the 1990's, but the dimples returned after 3 months of healing. Newer treatments evolved which are forms of massage and require a lifetime of treatments.
Thermage is a radiofrequency treatment designed to heat the skin and produce skin tightening. Since 2000 cosmetic surgeons have tried to use it for cellulite without success. After many years of research Thermage developed software that is capable of delivering heat more deeply beneath the skin and potential for treating cellulite arose. This year Thermage released its cellulite tip and initial reports have been excellent.
Now reports in the medical literature in 2005 and in 2008 have matched our own experience describing the successful treatment of white stretch marks using fractional laser therapy. Newer technology has improved the effects of fractional lasers. Perhaps the most advanced of these minimally invasive lasers with little or no down-time is The Affirm by Cynosure. Using the effects of 2 infrared lasers in one fiber, The Affirm heats tissues below the skin as well as the surface of the skin simultaneously to maximize reconstruction of the skin and to promote new collagen formation.
While Thermage treatment is delivered at one setting for cellulite, our experience is that an average of 5 treatments delivered every 2-4 weeks are necessary to treat stretch marks. With both treatments final results may not be seen for 3-5 months. On average patients can expect a 50% decrease in the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks although many patients may have even better results. Between August 10 – September 30 all patients treating stretch marks will receive a 10% discount and patients undergoing Thermage for cellulite will receive a 500.00 discount.
If cellulite or stretch marks have been a source of embarrassment, put Thermage and The Affirm Laser treatments on your list of things to do. And if you begin this summer it is an even better bargain as you stretch your dollars and shrink your concerns with summer savings at MetropolitanMD.
